Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Nov. 1918.

Edward Mathews died at his home in Farmersburg, Iowa, Friday, Nov. 8, 1918. He was born in Warren Co., Ohio, Jan. 27, 1855.

He came with his parents when only a few years old to Iowa, settling on what is known as the Mathew's farm in Wagner township. So that practically his entire life has been spent in and near Farmersburg, in the former years, working on the farm, and later being engaged in the clothing business in Farmersburg for several years.

He was married to Miss Stella Sebastian, Sept. 7, 1898. He had been in ill health for many years and on June 5, 1916, suffered a stroke of paralysis, which deprived him of speech and the use of his entire right side, and from this he never recovered; nor was he able to communicate with others, showing only by a warm hand clasp that he was glad to see his many friends.

Mr. Mathews had a genial, kindly nature and was a good citizen, a true friend, ready to help when he could, and during his long illness he was given the most tender and patient care by a faithful wife, aided by relatives and friends. Besides the wife, he leaves to mourn his death, one brother, James Mathews, Sr., of Farmersburg; three sisters Mrs. Will Love, of Ogden, Utah; Mrs. Louis Saake, of Wagner township; and Mrs. Will Brown, of Cresco.

He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and the Modern Woodman, and in the Masonic lodge proved himself to be a worthy brother, holding for several years the offices of Junior and Senior Warden.

Farewell my friend, but not forever, as we shall all follow soon.

Funeral services were held in Farmersburg, at the M.E. church, Nov. 10, at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. Self, of Monona officiating. Burial was in Farmersburg and Wagner cemetery. It was a Masonic funeral, conducted by the home lodge aided by members from other lodges. Mr. Douglas Brown of Elkader acting as W.M.

Mrs. Mathews wishes to give her heartfelt thanks to the friends who have aided her during the long illness of her husband, and most especially to the Masonic fraternity for their help and kindness.
