[from the Thurs., 23 May 1957 issue of the “Clayton County Register” (Elkader, IA), “Volga City News” section, page 7, column 1]

Herman Frederick Baars

Herman F. Baars, son of Henry and Augusta Adam Baars, was born on a farm near Volga on Dec. 12, 1886, and died May 18, 1957.

His education was received in the rural schools.

For several years, as a young man, Herman worked among the farm neighbors.

He was married to Bertie Adams Feb. 27, 1911. They operated the old Alf. Tenney farm for three years, later moving to the Daniel Green farm, where they lived for about four years. Then they moved to Volga, where Herman worked with the Lovett produce and the G. A. Smith hardware for several years before establishing a feed and produce store for himself, which he operated until his recent death.

For many years he was treasurer of Sperry township school district and also served several terms on the city council.

His parents, three brothers and one sister have preceded him in death.

He is survived by one brother, Fred C. Baars, and one sister, Mrs. Arno (Carrie) Gottschalk, both of Elkader, a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Blake and Gill chapel with L. H. Brandt of Garnavillo officiating. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery, Volga.

Casket bearers were Roy Candee, F. G. Cummings, G. W. Crandall, Wm. Moore, Roy Rinkert and Leo Becker.
