McDowell, William 1838 - 1928

William McDowell, son of James and Eliza McDowell, died Dec. 19, 1928 at the age of ninety years and twenty-three days. He was born in Bedford county, Penn., Nov. 26, 1838 and came to Clayton county with his parents when a lad of fifteen years.

One year later he went to Guttenberg where he made his home with a sister, Mrs. Cynthia Crawford, and while here he worked on the Mississippi river, rafting logs for a number of years.

July 4th, 1873 he was united in marriage with Ellen Harbaugh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Harbaugh. To this union eight children were born, namely: Winona Spencer, of Waterloo; Joseph McDowell on the home place; James McDowell, of Chester, Iowa; Delbert McDowell, of near Mederville; Grant McDowell, of near Elkader; Isaac McDowell, of near Edgewood; Blanche Carroll, of near Strawberry Point, and Mrs. Lizzie Moser, of near Greeley.

Mr. and Mrs. McDowell began housekeeping in the house which is now known as the United Brethren parsonage. From there they moved to their present home where they spent forty-seven years.

He was a devoted husband, a loving father and a good neighbor. Besides his aged companion, and eight children, he leaves to mourn his passing twenty-one grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in the Fairview United Brethren church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. N. Hulse, December 21. Interment was made in the Brown cemetery.
