McGregor- Albert Clemens, 84, who was in partnership with his wife, operated in McGregor for many years one of the largest and best known dry goods stores in this part of Iowa, died Monday after several years of illness. The funeral will be at the home at 2 p.m., the Rev. E. H. Shuey officiating. The Masonic lodge will conduct the graveside service.
Mr. Clemens was born in McGregor Dec. 12, 1859, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Clemens. Following graduation from the local high school, he attended the University of Michigan, and then for several years was in business at Johnson, Kans. Returning to McGregor he acquired an interest in Barron's store - a pioneer dry goods store of northeast Iowa - and later in partnership with his wife, Ruth Webb Clemens, whom he married on Aug. 12, 1902, bought out the business. The store was conducted jointly by Mr. and Mrs. Clemens until he was forced a number of years ago by failing health to retire. During his many years in business in McGregor Mr. Clemens was active in civic affairs, serving on the council, as bank director, Red Cross chairman, and trustee of the Congregational Church. He was a member of the Masonic lodge for more than 50 years.
Surviving are his wife, and a brother, Frank E. Clemens, of Vermilion, S.D. Roy Clemens, Dubuque, is a nephew.
