Funeral services for Frank J. Thurn, 69, were held at the Rhines funeral chapel at 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Park Anderson of Strawberry Point officiating. Burial was in the Union cemetery at Littleport. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in Edgewood. Music was furnished by the male quartette, Ray Minkler, Don Rhines, Claude Rulon and R.C. Cocking, who sang "Going Down the Valley" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," accompanied by Miss Jennie Forward. The pallbearers were Harlan Weyant, Oliver Jewell, James Nading, Roy Hochaus, Wm. Miller and James Adams.
Mr. Thurn died suddenly at his home Thursday, October 11, following a stroke a few hours earlier. He had been in poor health the past couple of months following a severe heart attack which hospitalized him at the time. After a two week stay in the hospital he returned home but never regained his full health.
Frank J. Thurn, was born of Franz Thurn and Elizabeth Pauli on June 11, 1876, spent his entire life span in Clayton County near Edgewood, departing this life on October 11, 1945, being 69 years and four months of age.
His early years were spent in the local school near the farm and in learning at an early age to take a very active part in bettering his home community. Mr. Thurn served on the board of directors of the Farmers Creamery Co. of Edgewood. He served as director of the Farmers Savings Bank and until his death he was a director of the Community Savings Bank.
He was dedicated to God in baptism by his parents while he was an infant and always held a high regard for the Christian life.
In 1898 he was united in marriage to Emma Ross and moved to a farm north of Edgewood. His entire life was devoted to farming. Very recently ill health has kept him from the work of the farm.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Frank Thurn, there are left to mourn his departure his two sons, William J. and Clarence E., and three daughters, Mrs. Laura M. Burgin and Mrs. Lillie F. Rowell of Edgewood and Mrs. Rosa E. Destival of Aurora. There are 15 grandchildren. There are also four brothers and one sister, William, Isaac, John and Ernest of Edgewood, and Mrs. Mary Evans of Manchester; two half brothers and one half sister, James of Littleport, Joseph of Manchester, and Mrs. Anna Brunkhorst of Lamont. A host of relatives and friends besides mourn the departure of their loved one.
