Clayton County Register, Thur., 28 Mar. 1935.

Henry Bente, life-long resident of Clayton county, was born on a farm in Cox Creek township, Clayton county, Iowa, on December 19, 1867, a son of William Bente and his wife, Margaret, nee Kress. He peacefully passed away at his home in Elkader on Friday evening, March 22, 1935, at the age of 67 years, three months, and three days, following an illness of long duration.

A number of years ago Mr. Bente submitted to an operation at Finley hospital, Dubuque, but in spite of the skill of the surgeons and all that loved ones could do God had willed otherwise and he continued in failing health. For the past three years he was confined to his home and was called upon to go through intense suffering. Through it all he remained patient and willingly resigned his fate into God's hands. His wife devoted her entire time to make his burden as easy as possible, and his children were present much of the time.

The deceased was christened by the Rev. F. W. Seifert at Clayton Center on June 13, 1868, and was confirmed on March 20, 1921. He remained faithful to his Savior until his death. He was a faithful member of the Evangelical church and for eleven years served as the janitor.

On September 19, 1889, he was united in marriage with Ida Mueller. Five children were born to this union; namely, Margaret, now Mrs. Harry Schulte of Read township; Fred and Harry Bente of Read township; Dorothy, now Mrs. Lorenz Wilke of Elkader. Carl, the fifth child, preceded his father in death in the year 1897.

After this marriage the couple settled on a farm near Mederville, and later resided on a farm in Read township. In the year 1917, the family came to Elkader to live where the deceased spent the remainder of his life.

He leaves to mourn his departure besides his wife and the four above named children, four sisters and four brothers; Mrs. Mary Archer of Jacksonville, Florida; Mrs. Anna Meese of Littleport, Iowa; Mrs. Katherine Englert of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Elizabeth Hesner of Chicago, Ill.; George, Frank and Mike Bente, all of Elkader. A sister, Ida Miller, and a brother, William, preceded him in death. He also leaves seven grandchildren and a large circle of friends who will miss him greatly.

Funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 p.m., and at 2:00 at the Evangelical church, last Monday. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery, with the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
