OBITUARY.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, July 23, the spirit of Augusta Heckmaster passed to its reward. A general breakdown in health occurred some weeks ago and though tenderly nursed by kin, ministered to by friends, failing strength was noted and the body gave way.
Deceased was born December 11, 1855, at Madison, Wis., the oldest daughter of Henry and Wilhemina [sic] Heckmaster and had reached the age of sixty-five years, seven months and twelve days at the time of her death. A portion of her life was spent at Madison, later the family came to Elkader, where other children were born.
In the late eighties the father and mother died and the care of the young children fell on the shoulders of Miss Augusta, a task under which she did not shrink.—“a work of faith, and a labor of love.”
She leaves to mourn her death: Chas. A., Mrs. Mickelson, Miss Mina, all of Canton, S. D.; Mrs. G. M. [sic] Davis, of Nora Springs, and Miss Julia and George at home. Two sisters, Mrs. G. Hulverson and Mrs. C. G. Smith, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock and interment made in the East Side cemetery. Rev. C. W. Hempstead read the funeral sermon.
TRANSCRIBER’S NOTES:
The Davis brother-in-law was Samuel M., according to the transcribed county record of his marriage to Dora Heckmaster. Her obituary states that she died on "Sunday morning, July 23," but Sunday fell on 24 July, so it's not clear if she died on 23 or 24 July.
