Local Business Woman Dies

Illness Is Fatal for Mrs. Katschkowsky

Mrs. Ruby Katschkowsky, active in business circles of Elkader for the past 14 years, died last Thursday, Dec. 2, following a major operation which she underwent at the Evanston hospital at Evanston, Ill. Mrs. Katschkowsky was stricken while visiting her daughter, Mrs. Herbert Engel, of Wilmette, Ill.

Mrs. Katschkowsky was owner of the Leibrock store, which has been on the roster of Elkader businesses for three generations. It was founded by her grandfather, Charles Leibrock, and later was taken over by Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Leibrock, her parents. She assisted her parents in the business following her graduation from high school in 1906 until she was married Aug. 17, 1910 to George Katschkowsky. Soon after her father died Aug. 10, 1929, she bought the store which was run by her mother and continued it under the name of Leibrock until her death.

Mrs. Katschkowsky was also active in social and church circles. She was past matron of Charity Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and an active member of the Evangelical and Reformed church. For many years she taught in the Sunday school and was one of the past presidents of the Frauen Verein.

Ruby Leibrock was born April 8, 1889, in Elkader, where she spent her entire life. Following her marriage, she and her husband established their home on the old Katschkowsky family farm, three miles west of Elkader, and remained there for a number of years. Later they bought a farm of their own a mile north on highway 13 and lived on it until they moved to town in 1920.

Mr. Katschkowsky died June 24, 1943. Besides her mother, Mrs. Katschkowsky is survived her three children, Laurine Engel, Capt. Robert C. Kent [sic] of San Antonio, Texas, and Katherine, who is attending the University of Iowa; her sister, Mrs. Robert Morse of Elkader, and her two brothers, Roy of Olin, Iowa, and Fred L. [sic] of Wauwatosa, Wis.; also three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held here Sunday at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o’clock at Friedens Evangelical and Reformed church with the Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating. Burial was made in the East Side cemetery. Pallbearers were August Taake, Henry Wolf, E. W. Carlsen, George Taake, William Reimer, and Roy Engelhardt.
