MRS. F. E. SCHMIDT.
It is with deep feelings of regret that we are called upon to chronicle the death of Mrs. Bertha Schmidt, nee Steglich, wife of our respected citizen F. E. Schmidt, which occurred at the home in Elkader Sunday, June 23rd.
She was born at Clayton Center, Aug. 2, 1866 and married to F. E. Schmidt July 9, 1886. Four children were born to them, Siegfried, aged 8, Felix, aged 6, Emil, aged 3 1/2 years and Mary who died last spring, only having lived about one week. Deceased had been in poor health for several months, seemingly she could not forget the little one who had preceded her to the better world, and on last Thursday was taken with inflammation of the bowels which resulted in her passing away about 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon. She was a kind, devoted, christian wife and mother, whose greatest pleasure in life was to attend to the duties of home and family. The funeral services were held Wednesday, June 26 from the East side church conducted by Rev. Father Seifert and assisted by the Gesang Verein. The interment being in the Elkader cemetery, attended by many of the sorrowing friends and neighbors of the deceased.
