Florilla Sophia Truman, daughter of Henry and Rowena Truman, and one of a family of twelve children, was born at Lafayette, Medina County, Ohio, on August 31, 1847, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Nading of Edgewood, at the age of 96 years, four months and 13 days.

When she was but three years of age she left Ohio with her mother, four sisters and four brothers and came to Iowa, and the family settled in the neighborhood of Volga City.

In August, 1865, Florilla Truman was united in marriage to Justin W. Thurber. To this marriage union five children were born, three of whom preceded their mother in death. The two surviving children are Mrs. James Nading of Edgewood, with whom Mrs. Thurber made her home for many years, and Jay Thurber of Cornell, Ill.

After coming to Iowa as a child of three years of age, with the exception of about three years spent in Kansas, Mrs. Thurbers life was spent in Clayton County. Doubtless, Mrs. Thurber was one of Clayton County's oldest residents since she came to the county in 1850, nearly 94 years ago.

Mrs. Thurber had five brothers who fought with the Union Army in the Civil War. One of her brothers was killed in that war.

Surviving Mrs. Thurber are: one daughter, Mrs. James Nading of Edgewood; one son, Jay Thurber of Cornell, Ill.; nineteen grandchildren, and a goodly number of great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

For thirteen years prior to her death Mrs. Thurber made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Nading. She remained in good health up to May 4. 1941, when she suffered a fall, injury from which did not permit her to get around thereafter. Her death came following the flu which she contracted soon after Christmas.

Funeral services were held at the Rhines Funeral Home in Edgewood at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, followed by burial service in the Mederville cemetery. The services were conducted by Dr. Thos. H. Smith, Pastor of Trinity Methodist Church in Edgewood. The following named Grandsons of Mrs. Thurber were the casket bearers: Charles Thurber, Clarence Thurn, Elmer Nading, Vernon Robbins, Milo Murphy and Walter Schuldt.
