David Lighty, the son of David and Louisa Lighty, was born in Hamilton Co., Ohio, January 19th, 1846 being the sixth of eight children, and died at his home in Edgewood, June 12th, 1921, being 75 years, 4 months and 24 days of age.

When he was six years of age he came with his parents to Iowa, coming across the country in a covered wagon, and settled on a timber farm on Bear Creek, Elk Township, Clayton County, Iowa, where he grew to manhood, receiving his education in the country school on Bear Creek.

In 1864 when he became eighteen years of age, the Civil War was in it's height and his country calling for soldiers, he immediately enlisted and served to the end of the war, being a member of the 9th Iowa Regiment of veteran volunteers.

On November 10th, 1867 at Cassville, Wis., he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Brockert. To this union twelve children were born, six of whom survive--David A. of Edgewood, Charles W., Perry J. and Frank B. of Elk Township, Clarence G. of Peru, Ind., Louisa A. Stevens of Andrews, Ind. Five children dying in infancy, John Edward in 1907 at the age of thirty two.

On November 24th, 1867 he and his young bride moved onto his 40 acres of woodland in Elk Township and began to clear out a farm, making this along with other land, which they bought and added to it their home until June 9th, 1912, when death entered and claimed the wife and mother.

On June 7th he was united in marriage to Malissa McGuire and came to Edgewood to make their home.
In September 1918 death again entered his home and took the wife and companion.

In October 1919 he was united in marriage to Mrs Francis Lewis, who with his six children, twenty one grandchildren and one great grandchild, a host of nieces and nephews, two brothers, Samuel of Columbia Falls, Montana, Solomon of Highmore, South Dakota and one sister, Mrs John Merrill of Hayward, Cal. are left to mourn his departing.

When he was about thirty five he was converted in the little church on Wolf Creek and united with the Methodist Church and afterward tried to live a consistent Christian life.

In his younger days he held many small offices and conducted them with honor to the office and himself.
He was a man whom friends loved, and his enemies, when he had any, respected.

He was an indulgent father, a kind and loving husband and a true friend.

While we will miss his wise council and advice, his smiling face, we can all say that the world is better for his having lived, and that in the future deserves to receive all that belongs to him as a child of God.
