Martha Louise Anna Mecklenburg was born Oct. 3rd, 1884, in Read twp. In October, 1903, she was married to Wm. Mertens for only eleven months. She was sick over two years and died on the 14th inst. The funeral services were held Friday in the German church, Rev. Leonhard officiating. The interment was at Volga City.

[NOTE: Her transcribed county marriage record at familysearch.org gives her name as "Martha Louisa Ida." Short news notes about the divorce proceedings between her and William Mertens are available in the 13 Apr. 1905 and 7 Sept. 1905 issues of the Elkader Register, and the 12 Apr. 1905 issue of the Elkader Argus.]
