Clayton County Register, Thur., 21 Nov. 1929.

James Mathews, son of Robert and Ann Mathews, was born at Warren, Ohio, Sept. 1, 1846, and died at his home at Farmersburg, Iowa, on November 13, 1929, at the age of 83 years, two months and 13 days.

He came, with his parents, to Clayton county, Iowa, at the age of eight years. They settled on a farm in Wagner township, where he resided until 1891, when he moved to Farmersburg.

He was married to Elizabeth Mulholland in Dec. 1872; to this union were born three children, Mrs. C. E. Witt, of Monona; Bert, of Oelwein; and Mrs. L. G. Lehman, of Elgin. The mother, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Mathews, passed away July 20, 1880.

On October 19, 1884, at Highland, Iowa, he was married to Oina B. Layton. To this union five children were born: James L., Mrs. L. A. Radloff, Leigh M., and Mrs. Wm. Reardon, all of Farmersburg; one son, Corporal Glenn E. Mathews, died at Brest, France, during the World War.

He is survived by his wife, the above mentioned children, other relatives and a host of friends. He had held numerous town and township offices, among them, being the first mayor of Farmersburg. For a number of years he has been associated with his sons, James L. and Leigh M., in business at Farmersburg.

Mr. Mathews was a home loving man, a model friend and neighbor, always willing to lend a helping hand, strictly honest in all his dealings with his fellowmen, his word being as good as gold. These characteristics, together with his genial disposition, made him the friend of all. To know him meant to esteem him. The passing of a good man is keenly felt by this community.

Funeral services were conducted at the home Friday afternoon, the Rev. Fellar, of Giard, officiating. Interment was made in the Farmersburg-Wagner cemetery.
