In 1854 he emigrated to America and settled down first in Mauch Chunk, PA. In 1854 he joined in holy matrimony with his wife, Lucia Catharine (born Dahse), who passed away in 1891. They had 6 children, 4 sons and 2 daughters. The oldest son, Carl, a father in manhood, went ahead into eternity. In 1857 the deceased moved to Clayton Center, Iowa, where he worked for a year and then moved near Postville where he acquired a property. He spent the last years of life in the family of his son Fritz Schultz.A special treat before his departure from this life when his son Henry came to visit after a 27-year absence. Henry dedicated himself, together with the family members of Fritz Schultz to the faithful care of the deceased. After eight weeks on a sickbed the Lord redeemed his loved one on Tuesday, 28 November, at 6:30 in the morning. The deceased was a faithful member and founder of the St. Paul's community. Among his healthy principles he always took an active part in the community. His memory will always be kept in honor.

Notes:
Groß (Gross) Schmölen is a small village near the present day town of Dömitz, Germany.Mauch Chunk, PA is now known as Jim Thorpe, PA.
His wife is listed as Elisabeth Lucia Dahse on her tombstone, Catherine must have been another middle name of hers.
