Joseph A.J. Winterlin, aged sixty-four, died at his home shortly after midnight Saturday of apoplexy. For nearly two years before his death he had been partially crippled and unfitted for work as the result of a slight stroke of apoplexy in January, 1912. Death came immediately following a second stroke.

Joseph Anton Jacob Winterlin was born of Swiss and German parentage in Schleisingerville, Washington county, Wisconsin, April 18, 1849. His mother died when he was six years of age. In his early teens he was apprenticed to a shoemaker in Milwaukee and learned the trade which he followed for fifty years afterward.

He first had a shop in Milwaukee. Later went to Chicago, reaching there shortly before the fire. In 1878 he came to Elkport, Iowa. At that place on the third of July, 1879, he married Margaret Asfolk*.

Ten children were born of the union, eight sons and two daughters. Three of the sons, Laurence, John and Alois, preceded the father in death.

The family moved from Elkport in 1890 to Elkader and six years later came to McGregor. Mr. Winterlin has worked at his trade here for most of the time the seventeen years since.

He leaves a widow, seven children and four grandchildren. Two sons, Will and Ben, and one daughter Anna, are in McGregor. Charles lives in Davenport, Joe and George, in St. Paul, and the married daughter, Mrs. Frank Vonesh, in Janesville, Wis. They were all home for the funeral held at the home on Monday afternoon. Rev. Cutler conducted the services. - North Iowa Times
