Ruth Elizabeth Kahrs

Funeral services were held for Ruth Elizabeth Kahrs, 90, Saturday, Oct. 15, 1988, at Bethany Luthean (sic) Church, Elkader. Rev. Jim Klosterboer officiated the service with burial in the Mt. Harmony Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Christen, David Kahrs, Ross Kahrs, Craig Kahrs, Kenneth Kahrs and Ronald Palas.

Ruth Elizabeth was born on the family farm at Elk Township of Clayton County, Iowa, the daughter of Balthaser and Christina (Lorcher) Hageman. She attended Upper Iowa University. After her education she taught in Clayton County rural schools for six and a half years, and for a year in Hysham, Montana.

June 14, 1924, she married Alfred J. Kahrs. Two children were born to this union. They lived in Colorado for several years until returning to the Clayton County area. Her husband died in 1946. She lived in her home at Elkader until going to Mankato, Minn., to live with her daughter Mary. She died there Tuesday morning, Oct. 11, 1988. She was active in her church as long as she could, enjoyed gardening, reading and was a member of the Coterie for a number of years.

Besides her daughter Mary V. Kahrs she is survived by eight grandchildren, Kristine Christen of Monona, Craig Kahrs of Las Vegas, Nev., David and his wife Mary of St. Olaf, Denise Palas and her husband Ron of Arlington, Kenneth and his wife Donna of Mesquite, Texas, Laurie Cheeseman of Monona, Julie Zuilek of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Ross Kahrs of Waco, Texas. Other survivors include 14 great-grandchildren and a brother Earl Hageman of Guttenberg.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by a son James in 1979, four brothers, a sister and her parents.
