James A. Kahrs Services Held
James Alfred Kahrs died on December 20, 1979, at his home in St. Olaf. Funeral services were at Norway Lutheran church with Rev. Keith Klemm officiating on December 24, 1979. Burial was at Mt. Harmony, Garber, Iowa. Witt Funeral Service in Elkader was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Jim Howard, Neil Nelson, Marvin Kahr, Robert Hilgerson, Virgil Lenth, and Rueben Glawe.
Mr. Kahrs was born on July 12, 1926 in Fort Collins, Colorado, the son of Alferd James Kahrs and Ruth E. Hageman Kahrs. He was baptized in Fort Collins and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport, Iowa. Later he joined the Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf, Iowa.
Mr. Kahrs served in the United States Navy for two years during World War ll. On September 21, 1952, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Leete in Rockford, Iowa. This union was bless with eight children.
Mr. Kahrs is a graduate of the Colesburg High School. He worked in the St. Olaf area most of his adult life as a truck driver and mechanic. He served for a time as Chief of the St. Olaf Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alferd in 1946.
He is survived by his mother, Ruth; by eight children: Kristine Christin of Luana; Craig of Elkader; David of St. Olaf; Denise Palas of Hiawatha; Kenneth of Edgewood; Laurie Cheeseman of Elkader; Julie of Chicago, Ill.; and Ross of Luana. He is also survived by their mother, Mary, and by eight grandchildren.
