On Thursday last, July 18, 1889, John Friend of this place was summoned to the bedside of his father at Clayton, who was quite sick, and who died that afternoon.
Christopher Friend was born at Stadbach, Byren, Germany, on October 22nd, 1822 and was consequently 67 years of age at the time of his death. He resided in Germany until he was 31 years of age, when he came to the United States, locating first at Baltimore. He resided there but one year when he removed to Iowa, settling first at Guttenberg, and afterwards at Clayton where he died.
He was a member of no church, organization nor of any secret society, yet during the thirty-five years of his residence in the county, he has always befriended the needy, and was strictly honest in all his transactions, and his death will be sincerely mourned by all who have known him.
He leaves an aged wife and two grown children to mourn his death. The funeral took place Friday afternoon, his remains being laid to rest in the cemetery in Clayton. The funeral was very largely attended by old time friends.
We are requested by the family to return their sincere thanks to those who kindly aided them in their hour of affliction.
