On July 4th, 1889, occurred the death of Mary, the 11 year old daughter of P.J. Kennedy, of Highland, of diphtheria.

This is the fourth child and fifth death in Mr. Kennedy’s family of this disease. First three children were called, and then the wife and mother followed them to the home beyond the grave, and now the heart broken father is called upon to part with his first born.

Two young children and the father are all that is now left of this once happy family. Five new made graves in the Catholic cemetery mark the last resting place of the loved ones gone before. Such is the ravage made by this dread destroyer within a few short weeks.

The survivors have the heartfelt sympathy of our entire community in their great affliction. Dr. Cain informs us that the two youngest children have not yet contracted the disease and it is to be hoped that they may be spared to their father.
