[from Thurs., 16 Jan. 1879 issue, Elkader Register, Elkport Local Items, page 3, column 5]

Died, Jan. 9th, 1879 of dropsy of the heart, youngest son of Thomas and Mary Flaherty aged 10 years and 2 weeks. Joseph has been sick since early last July and his death has not been unexpected. Several physicians had examined and prescribed for him, but there was no hope for the little sufferer. Disease had got too firm a hold. Life clung to the frail form until last week he was taken worse, and on Thursday his spirit past [sic] from earth to the God who gave it. This is the third child lost out of this family within two weeks.
