Rites for Walter W. Jacobs, Community Historian

Walter W. Jacobs, 73, died at his home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, of an apparent heart attack. Mr. Jacobs was author of “The First Hone Hundred Years,” a history of Guttenberg.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Fred Richardson, pastor of the United Methodist Church, at the Tuecke-Allenstein Funderal [sic] Chapel at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Masonic graveside services were held at City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were A. C. Becker, H. B. Tangeman, Realto Bechler, Don Groth, Troy Winegar and Jack Larson.

Walter W. Jacobs was the son of George M. and Elizabeth Kickbush Jacobs and was born in Guttenberg August 8, 1901. On September 21, 1928, he was married in Clayton County to Charlotte E. Aulwes, who died in 1965.

Mr. Jacobs was Guttenberg postmaster for 28 years until his retirement.

He was a member and past master of Prairie la Porte Lodge 147 AF and AM, and also a member of the following: the Council and Commandery, the Consistory in Clinton, Eastern Star, the Knight York Cross of Honor and El Zaribah Temple of Phoenix, Ariz.

Surviving are two sons, Walter G., of Sherman Oaks, Calif. and W. James of Guttenberg; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Ford of Guttenberg; 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Miss Emma and Miss Helen Jacobs, both of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Donald (Irene) McGuffin of Cedar Rapids, and two brothers, George and Stanley, both of Guttenberg.
