Strawberry Point - Michael J. Fitzpatrick, 63, a resident of Manchester for three years and of the Strawberry Point community for 25 years, took his life by hanging Friday afternoon at his farm, five miles south of Strawberry Point, while in a fit of despondency, caused by ill health.

Mr. Fitzpatrick had been assisting his renter, Eldo Storbeck, with the farm work, and had worked all morning, apparently in good spirits. He went into the barn shortly after noon and hanged himself. He was discovered by Mr. Storbeck, who came to his assistance. A doctor from Strawberry Point and Rev. J. Murtagh, of Edgewood, were summoned. Both came at once, but Mr. Fitzpartick succumbed within a short time.

The body was brought to his home on East Gay street at Manchester Friday night, and funeral arrangements are in incomplete, pending the arrival of his children. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's church, probably Monday morning, and interment will be made at Greeley, Iowa.

Mr. Fitzpatrick was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Fitzpatrick, pioneers of the Greeley community, and was the first child born to them after they located in Greeley.

He was born Nov. 25, 1866, attended the Greeley schools and Bayless Business college, Dubuque. On Sept 17, 1889, he married Miss Tillie M. Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Thomas, then of Greeley, at St. Joseph's church. Rev. Father Thomas Rowe officiated.

The couple lived in the vicinity of Greeley, where Mr. Fitzpatrick farmed, until 1902, when they bought their present farm five miles south of Strawberry Point. There they farmed until 1927, when they moved to Manchester.

Surviving Mr. Fitzpatrick are the widow, at Manchester [illegible words] children, and the following children: Mrs. Eva Duncan, Manchester; Francis E., Ft. Wingate, N. Mex.; Urban Fitzpatrick, of Williston, N. Dak.; Mrs. Dorothy Tinker, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Marian Reilly, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Albert L., Larimore, N. Dak.; Richard M., Minneapolis, Minn.; Belle and Marcus at home, and the following brothers and sisters: Dr. D.F Fitzpatrick, Iowa City; Bernard Fitzpatrick, Earlville, Iowa; Martin Fitzpatrick, Greeley, Iowa; Dr. J.M. Fitzpatrick, Chicago; Mrs. P.J. Lavelle, Struble, Iowa; Sister M. Theresa Fitzpatrick, DeSales Heights, Dubuque and Mrs. Will Groves, of Cedar Rapids.

Mr. Fitzpatrick was a member of the Catholic church.
