Rebecca Jane Dempster, daughter of John and Margaret Templeton Dempster, was born in Huron, Mich., April 15, 1849, and died at her home in Volga Feb. 28, 1933, at the age of 83 years, ten months and 15 days.

She was one of 13 children, five of whom were born in Scotland, five came to the United States in 1841 and settled in Huron, Mich. From this place they moved to Iowa and settled in the vicinity of Taylorville in 1853. Rebecca Jane attended the public schools and grew to womanhood in the Taylorville community.

On Dec. 12, 1866, she was united in marriage with James E. Bissell. On the same day in a double wedding ceremony, her sister Elizabeth and David Lowe were married, the wedding ceremony being conducted at the Bissell home by the Rev. N. George of the Methodist church.

Mr. and Mrs. Bissell were the parents of nine children, five of whom are living. Mr. Bissell preceded his wife in death on July 15, 1925.

Mrs. Bissell leaves to mourn her death, four daughters and one son: Mrs. Carrie Leete of Doud, Mont., Mrs. Mattie Abel of Vancouver, B.C., Mrs. Ida Robinson of Edgewood, Mrs. Bessie Voshell of this place, and Ed Bissell of Edgewood; one sister, Mrs. Eliza Lowe, of Volga, age 87 years, and one brother, John Dempster of Tyndall, S.D., aged 92 years. There are 23 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bissell was a member of the Methodist church of Volga, and until her health failed, took great interest in the work of the church.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 3, in the Methodist church. Burial was made in Hillcrest cemetery. Casket bearers were Ed Smith, Joe Chapman, Harry Rinkert, George Leete, Tom Lendman and Ed Hayes.

Among the out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were: Messrs and Mesdames David Dempster and family, Will Dempster and family, Charley Squires and Ed Smith and son Glen, of Arlington; Mrs. Mary Fox and Mrs. Will Frey of Wadena; Mr. and Mrs. Will Thompson of Fayette; Mr. and Mrs. James Dempster of Waterloo; Mrs. Clara White of Oelwein; Messrs and Mesdames Hans Baumgartner, Dale Howland and Ralph Litts and Robert Boleyn of Strawberry Point; Messrs. and Mesdames Leo Robinson and daughter Fern, Ed Bissell and sons Ray, Frank and Lee, Frank Welterlen, Don Rhines, Cliff Rhines and Mrs. Louie Berrinjaquet of Edgewood; Mr. and Mrs. Elwin Garkow, Mrs. Charles Garkow, and Alo Garkow of McGregor; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ewing and Mrs. Lester Crane of West Union and Ira Voshell of Arlington.
