John Hauschen was born in Galena, Ill., on the 12th of August, 1856, the son of John Hauschen and his wife Mary (nee) Carver. His father was a native of Germany and his mother of Scotland and they had come to this country shortly after their marriage in 1854.

John Hauschen learned the occupation of a blacksmith in Germany and followed this trade in Illinois and later in Clayton county, Iowa, where the family moved a year after the birth of our departed brother.

Our brother grew up in the village of Clayton and thus is one of the pioneers of our county. He obtained his education in the public schools and also attended the state college at Ames, Iowa. After completing his studies he taught school for several years. In his youth he had learned the trade of wagonmaker and in 1881, at the age of 25, he established a wagon shop in the village of Clayton. He carried on this business successfully until the year 1888, when he rented a 120 acre farm for seven years and then returned to the trade of wagon making. He was also employed for a time at the Clayton lumber yard for Mr. Luthsen and later by J.A. Hempeler.

In 1901 he entered the hardware business to which he later added a grocery business. In this business he was occupied at the time of his death. Aside from this business he also managed the Clayton office of the Standard Bell and Garnavillo telephone companies, and for a time sold oil for Mr. Luehsen. He also took an active part in the affairs of his home town by serving on the village council.

In the year 1881 he was married to Mary L. Kuenzel, who survives him. He also leaves four sons, Victor of Dubuque; Earnest of Elkport; Christopher of Freeport, Ill. and Edward, at home; and five grandchildren. Only one of his seven sisters and brothers survive him, his brother George of Everett, Wash.

Mr. Hauschen has been in failing health for some time but able to attend the duties of his business. The end came quite unexpectedly as the result of heart failure. He passed away Thursday night at 11:30, talking with his son Ernie. He had attained the age of 73 years, 10 months and 28 days.

In Mr. Hauschen the community has lost a valuable citizen and we all an esteemed friend, who was always ready and willing to help to the best of his ability. He has always been a faithful member of the Lutheran church of this village. May he rest in peace.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon in the Church of Peace. Rev. G. Bunge of Garnavillo officiated. The choir sang three lovely hymns. The floral offerings were beautiful, showing the esteem in which he was held. Burial at Garnavillo.
