Page one in an article about heat-related deaths:

Strawberry Point - Herbert Laity, 50, was overcome by the extreme heat Friday afternoon on the Laity farm three and a half miles southeast of here. He was riding on a load of hay with his father and a brother when he succumbed. He died a few minutes later. Funeral services were not completed Saturday afternoon.

There were three sets of twins in the Laity family and Herbert is the first of them to die.

Besides the father, Richard Laity, with whom he made his home, the victim is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Harvard, at home; Jay at Edgewood; Mrs. Mary Donohue, Mrs. Della Gladwin and Mrs. Albert Kash, all of Strawberry Point.

page 4:

The entire community was shocked and grieved last Friday afternoon when it was learned that Herbert Laity had been overcome by the extreme heat while working in the hayfield on the home farm with his father and brother. Despite every effort of physicians and loving relatives to prolong life, he passed away at 5:00 o'clock last Friday afternoon without regaining consciousness.

Herbert Laity was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Laity, Sr., and was born on April 26, 1880, on the home farm, where he spent his entire life. At the age of one year he was baptized in the Methodist church and he received his education in the rural schools. He was unmarried and spent his entire life in our midst, always cheery and his honesty, integrity and upright life made him a favorite with old and young alike.

Surviving him are his father, Richard Laity, Sr., his sisters, Mrs. L.N. Donahoo, Mrs. Zilla Gladwin, Mrs. Albert Kash and Mrs. J.J. Jewell, all of Strawberry Point, and his brothers, Harvard and Richard, Jr., of Strawberry Point and Jay of Manchester. His mother and one sister, Mrs. Clara Balluff, preceded him in death.

Words can not express the deep regret and sincere sympathy that the people of Strawberry Point and vicinity hold for those in sorrow. Rev. Elwick of the Methodist church at Strawberry Point had charge of the impressive funeral services, which were held at the family home Sunday afternoon. The choir from the M.E. church furnished the singing. After the services at the home, which were attended by a large gathering of relatives and friends anxious to show their regard for the memory of the one called from their midst and their sympathy for the sorrowing family, the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the family lot in our beautiful cemetery.

The casket bearers were Geo. Edmunds, Faye Nelson, L. Lehman, Otto Glenapp, Harry Troupe and Clarence Hebron.
