Died in Garnavillo, Jan. 21st, 1870, Mrs. Emily A. Smart, wife of H. G. Smart, Esq.
Her maiden name was Emily A. Guild. She was born at Bellows Falls, Vt., Jan. 29th, 1813, being the youngest of eleven children, of whom five sisters and one brother survive her. She was baptized in infancy in the Episcopal Church, and admitted to the first Congregational Church in Walpole, N.H., by a profession of faith, in the year 1850. She was married to H. G. Smart, Sept. 15th, 1836, and removed with her husband and children to Garnavillo in the year 1856.
At the time of her death her husband lay sick of brain fever. A week before her death she was laid on a bed by his side, sick of the same disease, unable to help him or he her. In this say way, a husband and wife, who have lived very happily together for almost thirty-five years, were called to part.
Mrs. Smart was a faithful and devoted wife, a loving, laborious, self-sacrificing mother, a good neighbor of hearty sympathy and ready help, for all who were sick and in trouble.
In the war of the rebellion, she was among the foremost in ministering to the relief of our sick and wounded soldiers.
A large concourse, of both Americans and Germans, at her funeral, testified to the esteem to which she was held in the neighborhood. Her children – three sons and two daughters – all survive to mourn the loss of their mother.
