Winfrey M. Smith was born Dec. 9th, 1825, in Clay County, Missouri and died Oct. 23rd, 1914, aged 88 years, ten months and sixteen days. Mr. Smith remained in Missouri until three years of age. He then moved with his parents to Pike County, Ill. Here he went to school some, remaining until he was ten years of age. in 1835 he moved to Galena, Ill., living there until sixteen years of age. He then moved to Iowa Territory, where his father settled on a farm. Here Mr. Smith received his first knowledge of farming. He later moved to the Bruce Flanigan farm, two miles north of Colesburg, in Clayton County.

He then entered eighty acres of land, joining his father's, and built a log house. He married Sarah Wilkison, of Virginia, Nov. 6th, 1853. In 1856 they moved to the home farm in Elk township, where he lived until his death. Here they worked hard to rear their family. There were fifteen children born to them, ten of whom, with his wife, have preceded him. There are left to mourn his loss five children, Mrs. Joseph Baxter and Mrs. Allen Hansel, both of Edgewood; Mrs. Marion Hansel, of Manchester, and David Smith and Samuel Smith, both of this place. Besides these there are thirty-three grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and other relatives and many friends.

Mr. Smith tried to live a Christian life and set a good example before his children. He joined the Methodist church when twenty-two years of age. Later he and his wife united with the United Brehern church, of which he was a member at his death.
