On Monday morning, April 29, 1918, our residents were shocked to learn that Diedrich Duwe had passed away at his home in this city on Monday morning at 2:10 o'clock, after but a few hours illness, the cause of his death being apoplexy, and his sudden death was a shock for his wife and children, as well as for his many other relatives and friends, as he had not complained or showed any signs of illness until late Sunday evening.
Deceased was born in Husum, Hanover, Germany, on March 12, 1847, and therefore was 71 years, 1 month and 17 days of age at the time of his death.
When six years of age he came to America, settling at once in Clayton County, Iowa. In the month of August, 1868, he was married here to Miss Marie Becker, and for many years he was successfully engaged in farming in Jefferson township. About 20 years ago he came to Guttenberg with his family to reside, where he lived until his death.
He also was an old and honorable civil war veteran, being a member of Co. E, 13th Regt., Iowa Inf. He enlisted on Nov 7, 1864, and was honorably discharged on July 21, 1865.
Mr. Duwe was an ambitious and trustworthy man during his entire life and held in high regard by all who knew him, and in his death this city loses one of its most worthy citizens and Clayton County another one of its pioneer residents.
His sudden death is deeply mourned by six sons, John, Ed and William, of Jefferson township, Mathis, Dick and Christ, of Guttenberg, two daughters, Mrs. Amelia Scholz, of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Mary Wolter, of Jefferson township; 25 grandchildren; one brother, Wm. Duwe, of Clayton; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Fischer, of Guttenberg and Mrs. Eliza Duwe, of Jefferson township, and many other relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed.
Funeral services will be held at St. John's Lutheran church in this city this afternoon. Interment will be made in the City cemetery. Rev. J. Janzig will conduct funeral services.

______________
The following appeared in either the same Guttenberg paper, or one a week later (I failed to record the issue date).....
I hereby wish to state that the party or parties who circulated the report about town last Thursday, "that I would not allow the U.S. flag in St. John's Lutheran Church during the funeral of our honorable civil war veteran and citizen, Diedrich Duwe," is telling a falsehood, and I would be willing to pay a reward to anyone who could give me correct information in regard to the party or parties who circulated this false report. I always have, and always will, honor Old Glory, as it is my flag, and the flag of the greatest country on earth, America.
Rev. J. Janzig
