Mrs. Maria Duwe passed away at her home in this city on Wednesday, July 2, 1924, her age being 73 years, 3 months and 21 days.
The deceased was one of the early pioneers of Clayton county. She was born March 11, 1850 at Neufahrt, Germany. Her parents were Chris and Minnie Becker, and with them she came to America and Clayton county in 1859.
She became the wife of Diedrich Duwe in 1868. Until 26 years ago they resided on a farm in this vicinity. Since she has resided in Guttenberg. Her husband preceded her in death in 1918.
She is survived by two daughters, Millie, Mrs. C.W. Scholz, and Mary, Mrs. George Wolter; also six sons: John, William, Ed, Matt, Dick and Chris, all of whom reside in Guttenberg. Twenty-five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive, as well as two brothers, Fred and Chris Becker and one sister, Lena, Mrs. William Harnisch.
She was a faithful member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church and of the Ladies' Aid society, and a woman respected and esteemed by all who knew her.
The funeral occurred on Sunday afternoon, July 6, 1924, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church, Rev. E. Lehne conducted the service. Interment in the City cemetery.
