St. Olaf - This community was grieved and shocked Wednesday morning when a message came that Mrs. Martin Bergan had met with an accident at Zumbrota, Minn., and was not expected to live.
Mrs. Bergan left here Tuesday morning for Zumbrota to visit her sister, Mrs. Knud Embretson in company with Mrs. Albert Clauson and children, Miss Nellie Nelson of Peterson, Minn., Mrs. Bergan's two children and Theodore Halverson. Everything went well and they arrived there safe on Wednesday. They were going to Fairbault for a trip in two cars. Mrs. Bergan was riding in her brother-in-law's car. Something happened to the steering gear and Mr. Embretson lost control of the car and hit a culvert with such force that Mrs. Bergan was thrown through the windshield and her throat was cut by splintered glass. Realizing that she was going to die she walked back to the car following and asked her sister, Mrs. Embretson to take care of her family and pray for her soul's salvation. In a very short time she became unconscious and she was taken in an ambulance to Rochester.
Her husband was notified and in company with his brother Willie and Mrs. William Carney they went to Rochester. They arrived at the hospital at five p.m. Blood transfusion had been resorted to but all was in vain and she passed away the same evening at 8:30.
The remains were brought to Monona and Saturday morning she was taken to the Bergan home where funeral services were held at one o'clock in the afternoon. The Norway church, where services were held, was packed to its capacity, Rev. Gunsten of Clermont officiating. The remains were laid away in Norway cemetery.
Mrs. Bergan's maiden name was Birgit Jenson and she was born in Veglid Nummedal, Norway, the 25th of January, 1890. In 1916 she came to this country and in 1918 she was united in marriage to Martin Bergan. To them were born two children, Clarence nine years of age and Hilda eight years old. Besides her family she leaves to mourn her loss four brothers and three sisters: Mrs. Knud Embretson of Zumbrota, Mary and Theodore of Rock City, Ill., Gurine, Stener, Per and Jens all in Norway.
They have lived on a farm in Wagner township a number of years, known as the Frank Frederick farm. Mrs. Berman was a kind hearted woman and liked by all.
