Bernice A. Heiderscheit, 88, of Waukon, died Sun., Nov. 19, 2000, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a lengthy illness. Funeral Mass was held Wed., Nov. 22, 11 a.m., at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Albin, with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Bernice Azalia Livingston Heiderscheit was born on Feb. 28, 1912, in rural Garber. Her parents were Ed D. and Amelia E. (Geisler) Livingston. She attended rural Clayton County schools and Elkader High School. In 1930, she married Harry Abel, who died in 1934. On Sept. 23, 1939, she married Francis J. Heiderscheit in McGregor. In addition to being a homemaker, Bernice worked as a seamstress in Dubuque for a few years and operated a cafe in New Albin with her husband, Frank, for over 20 years. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a volunteer at the New Albin meal site. Bernice enjoyed playing cards, was an accomplished seamstress, and an excellent cook and baker. She also enjoyed entertaining her family at her home.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Harry Abel and Francis Heiderscheit; a sister, Opal Grady; and four brothers, Russel, Harold, Bud, and Jim Livingston. Survivors include a daughter, Darlene (Eugene) Oesterle of Waukon; a son, Harry (Marlene) Abel of Marquette; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Suz Hogan of Lansing.

Honorary casketbearers were Leonard Heiderscheit, Jason Grady, Amy Diehl, Roger Wagner, Laurayn Mauss, and Shirley Weymiller. Casketbearers were Terry Oesterle, Keith Grady, Joel Sommer, Matt Johnson, and John and Perry Abel.

Martin Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family.
