Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Artemus and Serena (Jackson) Coon, was born near Johnstown, Crawford County, Pa., March (either 9th or 19th), 1843, and died at her home in Elkader, April 18th, 1917, at nine o'clock p.m., aged 74 years and 21 days, after an illness of three weeks, death being due to embolism.
When a small child nine years of age she came with her parents west, settling in Wisconsin, where she grew to womanhood. In 1863 she came to Iowa, locating in Elkader, Clayton Co., Iowa. Her on June 9, 1873, she was united in marriage to E.W. Stanton and to this union was born three children, Ella S., at home, Erhel R., now Mrs. A.N. Anderson, of Elgin, Iowa; and one son, Merl C., who died in infancy. Beside her sorrowing companion and two daughters she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Julia House of Conton, S.D. and Mrs. Sarah Crowe of Crawford Co., Pa., and four grandchildren, besides other relatives and many friends.
Mrs. Stanton was a lover of her home and family. Coming here when our little city was in its infancy, she and her companion have watched its progress with pleasure, their home and family growing dearer to them all the time. She was ever watchful of her loved ones and her keenest pleasure was when doing some little act such as only Mother knows for her children, and during the latter years of her life for her one little granddaughter and three little grandsons. Could she now speak to her loved ones, she would say:
Life! We've been long together,
Through pleasant and through cloudy weather,
'Tis hard to part when friends are dear --
Perhaps 'twill cost a sigh -- a tear --
Then steal way, give little warning;
Choose thine own time,
Say not Good Night, but in some brighter clime
Bid me Good Morning.Funeral services were held at the home at two o'clock Saturday afternoon, April 21st, 1917, Rev. Isaac Cassel, of the Congregational church officiating, interment being in the East Side cemetery beside her little son.
The pall bearers were W.W. Davidson, H.L. Griffith, Henry Lenth, Henry Jungblut, H.C. Pahls and F.G. Leibrock.
The floral offerings were many and beautiful, Charity Chapter, O.E.S., of which she was a charter member, sending a beautiful emblem.
