Died at his home in Garnavillo on Thursday, May 10, 1894. A combination of diseases attacked him about a month ago, but under skillful treatment and careful nursing he actually rallied, and hopes of his early restoration were entertained by his family. On Wednesday afternoon he grew rapidly worse but rallied during the night. On Thursday morning he called for his breakfast and partook of it with relish. At 9 o’clock he suddenly grew worse and by 10 o’clock he died without a struggle.
Louis F. Harberg was born in Garnavillo on March 26th, 1858. He was the eldest son of John Harberg who preceded him in death nearly 15 years ago.
After receiving a common school education; he learned from his father the cabinet maker’s trade, and later that of carpenter and builder.
On Jan. 9, 1881 he married Margaretha B., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Thoma. Six children were born to them, of whom three are dead. Louis was a whole souled tender-hearted man, who got by best means and faithful work to serve out his purpose in life, with his family he was tender and loving, to his friends, candid and true. His death causes a vacancy which can never be filled.
His remains were buried in the new cemetery on Sunday, followed by one of the largest funerals that has ever been in Garnavillo. The Garnavillo Turn Verein and Fidelity Lodge No. 133, A.O.U.W., assisted by neighboring Lodges, preceded the procession, the latter organization conducting the services at the grave. Rev. Sommerlad who is here on a visit, preached an eloquent obsequies.
