Died at his residence in Boardman township, August 14th, 1866, of bloody flux, Harlow Barnum, aged 56 years.
Mr. Barnum left this world of sorrow after a severe illness of two weeks; he has gone to try the blessed realities of our “Father’s Home,” in a world of bliss. His friend can but drop a tear to his memory, and while we mourn for him let us bear in mind that what is our loss, is his Eternal gain.
In his death the community lost a respected and honorable citizen, the church to which he belonged, a faithful member – and his family a kind and affectionate father and protector.
Although his illness was severe he retained his consciousness through all, speaking of his approaching death freely, expressing not only willingness, but a plea sure to depart and be with God.
He talked freely with his family and their friends, making all the arrangements for his burial.
It was his request that the burial service be read by Mr. Partch, and at some convenient time in the future. Rev. Joy Bishop should preach his funeral sermon.
He died as he had lived, trusting in God as his shield and his guide, and firm in the faith of the Universal salvation of all mankind.
On the 15th his remains were followed to his last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing friends, and consigned to the silent tomb. As the tears of his friends freely flowed over his grave, they were comforted with the thought that he was with God, for, to us his own words, he was only “going home.”
