Geo. Daubenberger Meets Tragic Death
Struck by Auto As He Was Crossing Street

On Thursday evening last at about 6:30 o'clock as Geo. Daubenberger was on his way down town from his home he was struck by a car in the intersection near the Maggie Mitchell corner and received injuries from which he died two hours later at the Postville Hospital.

The car which struck Mr. Daubenberger was driven by Louis Heins Jr., a son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Heins Sr., northwest of Postville. Louis was enroute from his home to the Gilbert Stockman garage in this city, where he is employed. As he neared the crossing in question he of a sudden saw Mr. Daubenberger directly in front of him, he slapped on his brakes, swung his car to one side and skidded for some distance on the paving, and by so doing avoided hitting Mr. Daubenberger head on. It was the fender of the car that hit the unfortunate man and he was thrown over onto the hood of the car, where he remained until the car went over the curb on the north side of the street near the John Koevenig residence and came to a stop, the tilt of the car permitting Mr. Daubenberger to roll off to the paving. Ed F. Schroeder, who was enroute to supper, heard the noise of the collision and hurried to the scene, and he with the assistance of Mr. Heins and a traveling man, west bound, who was halted by the accident, picked Mr. Daubenberger up, placed him in the Heins car and took him to Postville Hospital, where it was found he had sustained a basal skull fracture from which he passed away about two hours later without regaining consciousness.

From all appearances it was one of those regrettable and unavoidable accidents that occasionally occur.

The people of this city and vicinity were shocked and grieved on last Thursday evening at a little after nine o'clock when the word was passed around that George Daubenberger, an old and highly respected resident of Postville had passed away at Postville Hospital as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident about three hours previous to his demise, the particulars of which are given elsewhere in this issue.

George Daubenberger, son of Frank and Katherine Schmidt Daubenberger, was born at Rockton, Illinois, August 27th, 1856, and died at Postville, Iowa, on Thursday evening, December 29th, 1932, aged a few months more than 76 years.

On February 23, 1885, he was united in marriage with Margaret May Eno, and they made their home on a farm in Clayton county, Iowa, until 1912, when they moved to Postville, where they have since resided.

Mrs. Daubenberger preceded her husband in death by exactly three months.

Eight children were born to them, all of whom survive to mourn the departure of their parents, as follows: Elmyra May, Jane Isabelle, Mattie Everall, Ruth Blanche, William George, Clare Margaret, Amy Lucille and Leslie Eno. There are also twelve grandchildren.

Mr. Daubenberger was known to all as a good husband and father, a kind neighbor and true friend, whose passing will be regretted by all who knew him, and the sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved family in their hour of sorrow.

The funeral was held from the home on New Year's Day afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. R. F. Galloway, pastor of the Community Presbyterian church conducting the service. Interment was made in the Eno cemetery in Wagner township.
