Died in this place on Thursday, December 6th of Scarlet Fever, Emeline Maria, daughter of Buel and Friendly A. Knapp, aged five years, three months and six days.

They tell us our hearts will be with our treasures,

Whether laid upon earth, or garnered above,

That there we shall turn, and be clinging forever,

To the pearls we have gathered, the gems that we love,

The hands, the dear hands, that have clasped mine so often—

The cheeks that to mine have been tenderly pressed;

The fond hearts that beat for me truest and longest-

These are my treasures, my brightest, my best.

But one treasure’s in Heaven, by Angels ‘til kept,

In realms of bliss, beyond the bright sun,

Of our first given blossom, we now are the left-

Our well beloved Emeline, our beautiful one.

How we hung o’er her couch, whilst by day and by night,

The fever was burning her fair young check;

And the dear little hands that we clasped so tight-

While praying to God, this treasure to keep.

Our prayer was unheeded one casket is laid,

Deep down to moulder in the dark silent dust;

And the Stars still shine, though her grave has made,

A shadow, were our joys lie hushed.

Our gem’s set in Heaven, our bright jeweled star,

Our pearl that God ‘gave us, a short time to keep-

The Diamond our Maker did polish while here,

And left naught but the dust, and the dress at our feet.

Note: Her parents Buel & Friendly (Matthews) Knapp are buried in Maplewood cemetery, Luverne, MN. They both died in the 1890's. They left Elkader in 1870, moving to McGregor, then in 1880 to Luverne, MN. Emeline is most likely buried in/near Elkader.
