Charles Fuerste,
whose death we mentioned in last week’s Press, was born at Guttenberg, Iowa, on July 6[,] 1855, and died on March 7, 1917, at his home in this city at the age of 61 years, 8 months and 1 day, after about a ten days illness. When finishing the Guttenberg schools he learned the Machinist trade, which he made his life’s work. When about 19 years of age he went to Dubuque and was employed for two years in the railroad shops[.] From there he went east spending some time in Philadephia [sic] and New York. While in New York he also attended the Cooper Institute, after which he was employed for some time at his trade in Milwaukee, Cincinnati and St. Louis. In the year 1884 he returned to Guttenberg and from that time on he operated with success the Guttenberg machine Shop until his recent unexpected illness. On March 27, 1886, he was married to Miss Lena Logar [Logier], of Guttenberg. About two weeks ago he had a stroke of paralysis, and in spite of all that loving hands could do and medical knowledge could suggest, death called him to the Great Beyond. Mr. Fuerste was an ambitious and honest man during his entire life, and he was a kind and loving husband, father and brother. He was a member of the Woodman and Yeoman Orders[.] His death is deeply mourned by his wife, one son, Fritz, one daughter, Louise, one brother, William, of New York, one sister, Louise, of Guttenberg, and a number of other relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed. Funeral services were held at his late home in this city on Saturday afternoon, under direction of the Woodman Order. Interment was made in the City Cemetery. The funeral was large [sic] attended, which showed that deceased was held in high regard by all who knew him.
