Died in Monona Township, Clayton Co., Iowa on October 12, 1855, Eliza A. daughter of B. Phillips aged 21 years.
Her disease was Typhoid fever. It seemed to be one of those cases over which the skill of Physicians and the tender care of friends could exert no control. She lingered about two weeks, and death demanded its own.
The subject of this notice was one who was universally beloved, and her many virtuous qualities had endeared her to all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. Her family connections are in mourning, and a withering gloom rests upon the whole community, and all are led to say, “what shadows we are, what shadows we pursue.” Yet we have within the heart a hope that we shall meet her again in a land where the ties of earthly love will never be sundered, where the inhabitants will not say “I am sick.” The event is a lesson to us all, and bids us, like her to “so live that we can approach the grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams.” Her funeral services were attended on Sunday by an unusually large and deeply affected audience.
