On Tuesday afternoon, John H. Walke, who had been afflicted several years with chronic lung trouble, quietly passed away.
He was born in Sledenhausen, Hanover, Germany, on July 24, 1834, and came to Guttenberg with his brother, Herman in 1854. After working with John Tuecke, near Ceres, one year, he purchased a farm four miles west of Guttenberg, on which he has since lived.
He was twice married. His first wife was Mary the daughter of Joseph Tuecke, with whom he was married in the spring of ’59, with whom he had 3 children, of whom one is living – Catherine, wife of William Overbeck.
On June 20, 1865, he was married to Mina, daughter of Philip Wuensch, with whom he had the following seven children: Mary, wife of George Schroeder, living near Spencer, S.D., Sophia wife of Fritz Mueller, living in Garnavillo township; Margaret, wife of Wm. Brandtman, living near Luana; Herman, August, Frederick and Alvina, living at home with their mother.
He was an industrious and successful farmer, a loving husband and a kind father, and was well known and highly respected by many residents of Clayton county, who regret his departure. He was a member of the German Lutheran church at Ceres. The funeral takes place this afternoon. His remains will be laid to rest in the Ceres cemetery.
