Brandt, Herman H. 1817-1896

BRANDT, MEYER, SCHMALFELD, BENJEGERDES, DETTMER

Herman Henry Brandt was born March 10, 1817, in Ostereistedt, Amt Zevern, Hanover, Germany.

In August, 1840, he was married to Anna M. Meyer. Three children, Louis, Henry and Mrs. Henry Dettmer, blessed this union.

In 1857 the family emigrated to this country, landing at New York, where the eldest son Louis, found occupation. The remainder of the family came to Guttenberg, and after a few months’ stay upon the farm of Jno. H. Meyer of Ceres, removed to the farm now occupied by John H. Stiehl.

After living here 6 years, the family removed to the old Jno. Tangeman’s farm, upon which Mr. Brandt resided until a number of years ago, when he removed to town, his son Henry taking charge of the farm.

On Sept. 17, 1879 Mr. Brandt’s first wife died and on Oct. 12, 1880 he was married to Mrs. Maria Schmalfeld. She died Oct. 31, ’83, and in Nov. 7, 1884, Mr. Brandt was again married to Mrs. Wilhelmine Benjegerdes, who survives him.

Through all his years of arduous toil Mr. Brandt was always in good health, being a man of iron constitution. Several years ago, however, la grippe attacked the body already enfeebled by old age, and since then Mr. Brandt has never been totally well again.

He died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1896, at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 25 days. His death occurred after a long and painful illness. He was buried Tuesday, February 11, Rev. O. Gammelin officiating. He was buried in the Garnavillo cemetery.

Mr. Brandt was a man who started in this country, as a man of moderate means. By untiring labors, economy and thrift however, he built up a farm and fortune which is probably second to none in the county and which will ever stand as a monument to his pluck and industry, and be a continual reminder to his posterity, of the father they have lost.
