A.J. Carpenter, cashier of the Corydon State Bank, and former cashier of the First National Bank of Elkader, died Monday morning, Nov. 17, of heart trouble, while driving his car near Albia. Mr. Carpenter had been in poor health for some months.

Arthur Jones Carpenter was born in Buchanan county, near the present town of Aurora, June 16, 1871. His parents were Lorin D. and Mary Andrews Carpenter, both of New England parentage. While Mr. Carpenter was a small boy, his parents moved to Brush Creek, now Arlington, and he received his early education in a school at that place. Later he attended Upper Iowa University at Fayette for three years.

He worked for a time at the iron molders trade, later took up school teaching for a brief time, and also worked in the Arlington and Fayette banks.

In 1893 he came to Elkader, as bookkeeper in the office of the Register. He left this position to study stenography, and completing his course, returned to Elkader, entering the law offices of R.E. and V.T. Price and J.E. Corlett.

In 1898 he was elected cashier of the First National Bank of Elkader, which position he filled until 1924.

For about two years he was employed with the State Banking department as examiner in charge of the liquidation of closed banks, and in 1926 he went to Corydon to take charge of the Wayne County State Bank for the department. Finding reorganization favorable, he assisted in forming the Corydon State Bank as its successor. Early this year the First National Bank of Corydon was consolidated with it.

This entailed considerable work for Mr. Carpenter, and with an attack of influenza in march, left him in a weakened condition, from which he never entirely recovered.

Mr. Carpenter was married April 25, 1901 to Miss Alice Patterson of Elkader, who died June 9, 1903, leaving him with one daughter, Gladys.

On Oct. 19, 1905, he married Miss Alice Howard of Elkader, a close friend of his first wife, and four daughters were born to them. Their mother died January 3, 1917.

Mr. Carpenter is survived by his five daughters, Mrs. Gladys Schori of Elgin; Ruth H. at Orlando, Florida; Gertrude, Lorraine and Mary of Fayette; also by one brother, Charles Carpenter, and one sister, Mrs. Carrie Whitney of Fayette.

The remains were taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Schori, at Elgin, Tuesday evening, accompanied a portion of the way by an escort from the Corydon Masonic lodge and the remainder of the way by an escort from Elkader lodge No. 72.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church at Elkader, Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Charles T. Brewster officiating. Interment was in the family lot in the East Side cemetery.
