Funeral services were held for William Herbert Van Duyn, 73, Saturday, Nov. 27, 1993, at Hope Lutheran Church, Littleport. Pastor Laurel Halvorson, Intern, officiated the service. Pallbearers were John Zapf, Dan Zapf, Al Pritchard, John Wiley, Amos Pritchard and Clair Kruger.

William Herbert Van Duyn was born September 28, 1920, at Coburg, Ore., to Herbert and Marjorie (Foster) Van Duyn. He was raised and educated in the area, graduating from the local high school. William worked on his father's ranch and for others in the area until entering the United States Navy in 1941.

William was united in marriage to Birdena Rieck November 17, 1945. Over the year he remained in the Navy and in 1961 went from active duty to reserve. He retired from the service in 1971. He went to work for Litton Electronics while living in Saugus, Calif. He retired from there in 1981. They moved to Iowa in 1983.

His wife died November 2, 1984 and he married LaVera (Hakert) Smith on January 11, 1987. Together they have resided at Littleport. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.

Due to failing health, he entered the Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point on October 7, 1993. After a short illness, he died Tuesday morning, Nov. 23, 1993, at the Central Community Hospital in Elkader.

Survivors include his wife LaVera; three stepsons, Danny Smith of Keosauqua, Lanny Smith of Miles, and John Smith of Elkader; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Allyn (Ilona) Durey of Manchester and Lavera Cutchlow of Littleport; 12 step-grandchildren; a brother Ken Van Duyn of Portland, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
