Elkader- Carl Schampfer, 78, pioneer Elkader resident, died Friday morning at his home here. He had been suffering from a heart ailment for many months.
Born in Germany in 1870, he came to Elkader in 1906. A carpenter, he organized the Schampfer Contracting Company in 1906 and remained in business in Elkader until 1924. In that year he became associated with the J. F. Stamfer Company at Dubuque as a wood worker.
He retired and returned to Elkader in 1939. The Schampfers celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary Feb. 12, 1947.
Surviving are his wife and three sons, William, head of the department of industrial economics at Iowa State College, Ernest, of Whitmore Lake, Mich., and Herman, of Elkader; two daughters, Barbara Short and Helen Schampfer of Western Springs, Ill.
Services have been tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the Witt Funeral Home.
