Guttenberg- Alois "Al" J. Lake, 98, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 14, 1995, in Guttenberg Care Center after a brief illness. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, by the Rev. Richard Gaul. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, where a wake service begins at 7:30 p.m.
Survivors include a daughter, JoAnn and husband Dr. George Auer of Guttenberg; a son Dr. Carlton and wife Wilma Lake of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen and husband Dr. Don Meder of Guttenberg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Helena Tieke Lake; his wife, Leonilla Steger Lake; two sisters, Hilda Kuempel and Clara Tillia; and two brothers, Edward and Dr. Anthony Lake.
Born May 27, 1896, in Guttenberg, he graduated from St. Francis Xavier Boys School in Dyersville. On June 26, 1923, he married Leonilla Steger at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Dyersville. Alois owned and operated the Kuempel & Lake Hardware Store in Guttenberg for 42 years. He was a World War I Army veteran and a member of Guttenberg American Legion and Knights of Columbus.
