Garber- Betty Mae Palmer, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006, in Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, following a brief illness. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. John's Congregational Church, Garber, by Pastor Rusty Phillips. Burial: Mount Harmony Cemetery, rural Elkport. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader, and after 10 a.m. Monday at the Church.

She was born Sept. 25, 1927, in rural Garber, to Ernest and Emma (Jaster) Smock. Betty graduated from Elkport High School in 1946.

Betty was united in marriage to Oscar Cole, on Sept. 25, 1948. Three children were born to this union. Oscar died Nov. 8, 1969. She married Edward Palmer on June 9, 1973, and he died Feb. 19, 1976.

Betty and Oscar operated Cole's Store in Garber and also sold corn and feed. She was a correspondent for the Clayton Register and the Guttenberg Press. Betty also helped Dennis Freitag with the voting process.

Survivors include two sons, Al (Wendy) Cole of Strawberry Point and Aaron (Alysia) Cole of Glenwood; her son-in-law, Jeffery Moser of Marion; 18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Joleen Fassbinder of Guttenberg.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; a daughter, Aileen Moser; four brothers, Burdette, Pete, Nellie and John; and three sisters, Blanche Cardin, Beulah McAmis and Bernadine Rentschler.
