McGregor, Ia., Oct. 18 - The funeral of John Durr, McGregor's faithful night watchman for many years, was held at the home on Giard avenue Wednesday afternoon.
John Durr was born in Harrisburg, Sauk county, Wisconsin, August 4, 1860. When three years old his parents moved to Iowa, settling in Clayton county, near McGregor.
He was united in marriage to Susan Schmidt in 1883. Two children were born of this union, Arthur and Hilda (Mrs. Martin Eggen). His wife, Susan, died July 5, 1892.
On Jan. 18, 1893, Mr. Durr married Mame Russow. To this union five children were born, John Jr., George, Bertha (Mrs. Theodore Gerndt), Mame (Mrs. Hafferbecker) and Lydia.
Mr. Durr leaves the following to mourn his passing: Arthur J. Durr, McGregor; Mrs. Martin Eggen, McGregor; George Durr, Des Moines; John Durr, Jr., McGregor; Mrs. Mame Hafferbecker, Dubuque; Mrs. Theodore Gerndt, McGregor; Miss Lydia Durr, McGregor; Mrs. Mame Durr, McGregor; Anne Gerndt, Housington, Kansas. Mr. Durr had 19 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. Priestley, of the McGregor Congregational church. Casket bearers were Messrs. Alvin Adney, George Weir, Arthur Gilbert, Archie Mann, Ray Adney and Alvin Becket.
