Postville Review, Postville, Iowa, Fri., 20 Mar. 1908. From the Guttenberg Press, Guttenberg, Iowa, undated.

Death in a most tragic form entered the home of Henry Lindenberg, a farmer residing about three miles northeast of Elkport, Sunday, and laid claim to his daughter, Tillie, a young lady aged about 22 years. The accident which resulted in the young ladies death 12 hours later, occurred at 7:30 Sunday morning. She had arisen some time previously and started a fire in the heating stove, after which she left the house and went to the barnyard to milk the cows. Upon returning to the house she found the fire in the stove had failed to burn, or apparently so, and securing the kerosene can poured a quantity of oil into a cup and threw it into the stove. The stove was an old fashioned heater with an opening near the base and when she threw the oil in a flame instantly shot out and instead of coming out of the door, as one might suppose, burst from the opening below, setting fire to her skirts. Realizing her predicament she ran to the water pail and in an attempt to extinguish the flames, which were rapidly enveloping her, the pail was upset and the contents spilled on the floor. Failing in this in her excitement she ran out of doors and by that time was almost a mass of flames.

At this juncture her aged father, who had been aroused by her screams, hastened from his room and found her in the yard frantically fighting to put out the fire. He reached his daughter as quickly as possible and attempted to snatch the remaining burning pieces of wearing apparel from her body, but was unable to accomplish scarcely anything and almost every thread of clothing, together with the upper portions of her shoes, burned, leaving the body from head down a roasted mass of flesh. No burns were in evidence about the face except a slight one on one cheek. Medical attendance was at once summoned and everything possible done for her relief, but after lingering for twelve hours and enduring the most severe torture to which a human could be subject she passed away at 7:30 Sunday evening.

In attempting to save his daughter the father was most severely burned on both hands and arms and it was feared for a little time after the accident he would lose one arm. His condition is very serious, yet there is every hope for his recovery.- Guttenberg Press.

The deceased was a sister of Mrs. Herman Walke of this city, who was at the funeral which was held at Elkport on Wednesday of last week, and the sympathy of many sincere friends is with her in this great affliction.

(NOTE: WPA records show Mathilda E. J. Lindenberg with a death date of 8 Mar. 1908. The IGPP shows a picture of her tombstone in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Elkport.)
