Postville Herald, Postville, Iowa, Fri., 21 Oct. 1920.
Melissa J. Pixler was born on the old Pixler homestead in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county, Iowa, Sept. 30, 1851. Here she spent her girlhood days until she entered school at Monona and Fayette. She took up the profession of teaching. She taught school in Clayton and Fayette counties. Later she went to Cherokee, Iowa, where for several years she continued teaching. She then returned to the old home where she remained caring for her parents. Her father passed away in 1906. Her whole time was then taken up in caring for her mother, who lived to the ripe old age of 86 years, dying in 1911. She also cared for and helped raise two nephews, Verne and Harold Brewer, who were left motherless at a very early age. After the death of Verne in 1913 she again went to Cherokee, where she made her home up to the time of her death, which occurred Monday morning, October 11, at the J. A. Miller home, where she had been tenderly cared for during the illness of the past year. Her age was 69 years and 11 days.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Larkin and Mrs. Margaret Brownmiller of Cherokee, and one brother, George Pixler of Postville.
The funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Cherokee, of which she was a member, Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock and the remains brought to Postville Wednesday morning, accompanied by J. A. Miller. They were then taken to the Congregational church, where services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by Rev. L. W. Wiltberger. Interment in the Postville cemetery.
Four sisters preceded her in death some time ago and Melissa has now joined them, for the Lord hath said, "Come up higher."
