Monona- Alvin G. Johnson, 77, formerly of Monona, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in Scenic Acres, rural St. Olaf, after a long illness. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday, First Lutheran Church, rural McGregor. Burial: church cemetery, with military honors. Arrangements are with Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home, McGregor.
He is survived by a son, Brad (Valerie) Johnson of Toms Brook, Va.; a daughter, Charlene Bacon of Monona; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Schlitter of Luana.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jim; and a sister, Muriel Hallberg.
Alvin was born March 24, 1923, in Elgin, Iowa, to parents Julius and Mabel Amundson Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. He attended country school. He served in the army in the Pacific during World War II. He married Geraldine Whittle on Nov. 10, 1948. He farmed and drove truck for many years in Clayton County and also worked at the Monona Tavern for three years. Alvin enjoyed reading and gardening. He was a lifetime member of AMVETS Post 27 in Monona.
