Saturday last our people were called upon to mourn the death of our oldest and most respected citizen, whose demise occurred after a long and painful illness.

Although it was known death's hand could not be stayed much longer, yet the intelligence that William H. Doty had passed away brought with it pain, regret and surprise. For the past two years he had been gradually nearing the end, and although his devoted wife and children, assisted by kind friends, did all in their power to ease his pain and stay the grim destroyer, the disease steadily encroached upon the once robust constitution, and on Saturday morning, February 17th, 1906, he paid nature's last great debt.

William H. Doty was born in Pennsylvania, September 5th, 1836, and died at his home in Highland, February 17, 1906, at 7:30 in the morning.

In the year 1858 he came and engaged in farming in Clayton county. When the war of the rebellion came he left his plow and shouldered his gun in defense of the country he loved, serving with honor and bravery in Co. E, 9th Iowa Infantry from Sept. 12, 1861, to Oct. 26, 1862.

On April 13, 1865, he was married to Lucretia A. Robbins, in Benton county and in that and in Boone county they made their home for about four years. He then returned to Clayton county and settled on the farm where he has since resided.

To this union two sons were born, Charlie, who conducts the Highland store, and Bert, who resides near Elkader.

He has lived a good noble life and was always ready to accommodate a friend or assist a neighbor and for the many kind deeds performed by him she shall live long in the memory of his fellow men.

Besides his wife, sons and two grand children, there are many relatives and friends who will miss and mourn the going home of this good man.

Funeral services were held at the Illyria Union church, Monday, conducted by Rev. Temple, and interment was made in the Illyria cemetery.
